Timber lattice is the softest way to add privacy to an Australian garden: it screens the view, lets breeze and dappled light through, and gives climbing plants something to hold. We build lattice as full-height fences and screens, as infill above a paling or lap-and-cap fence, as pergola and deck sides, and as 300 mm or 600 mm toppers to lift an existing fence.

Panels are framed in treated pine so they stay square, fixed between H4 posts or to existing rails, and finished natural, oiled, stained or painted to match the house. The photos on this page show our treated pine fencing and the lattice-top fences and gates we build in Sydney.

Ways to use timber lattice

Privacy screen – a 1.8 m framed lattice screen beside a deck, spa or outdoor room; 25–40 mm openings for the most screening.
Fence topper – 300 mm or 600 mm of lattice above an existing paling, lap-and-cap or Colorbond fence, framed to match.
Garden divider – lower 900 mm–1.2 m lattice to separate a vegetable garden, pool area or clothesline without blocking the view.
Pergola and carport infill – lattice sides for shade and a surface for climbers such as star jasmine or wisteria.
Under-deck and sub-floor screening – hides storage and keeps animals out while letting air circulate.

Making it last

Treated pine lattice fails in three places: where the battens meet the ground, where unframed edges flex and split, and where the finish is never renewed. We keep lattice at least 50 mm off the ground on a bottom rail or plinth, frame every panel so the battens are held on all four sides, use galvanised or stainless fixings, and recommend an oil or stain at installation and every two to three years after. Painted lattice should be primed on all faces before assembly – we can supply panels pre-primed.

Lattice on Colorbond fences

If your existing fence is Colorbond, a timber topper is possible but a colour-matched steel lattice insert is the neater, longer-lasting option – it slots into the same posts and never needs painting. We do both; we will tell you which suits the fence you have.

Installation

New screens: H4 posts concreted 600 mm deep at 2.4 m centres, bottom rail at 50–100 mm above ground, framed panels screwed to posts and rails.
Toppers: existing posts extended or sistered, or steel post extenders fitted; framed lattice fixed above the top rail; capping to match.
Finish applied on site or panels pre-finished before installation.
Most screens and toppers are finished in a day.

Common questions

What is timber lattice made of?

Treated pine battens (typically 32 × 10 mm or 42 × 12 mm) fixed in a diagonal or square grid and framed in a 70 × 35 mm treated pine surround. H3 treatment suits above-ground use; posts are H4. Hardwood and Western red cedar lattice are available to order.

Diagonal or square lattice?

Diagonal (diamond) is the traditional Australian pattern and hides more; square lattice is more contemporary and pairs well with modern homes. Both come in 25 mm to 75 mm openings – the smaller the opening the more privacy.

How long does treated pine lattice last?

Framed, stained or painted, and kept off the ground, 15 years or more. Unfinished lattice greys off and will last 8–12 years. A coat of oil or stain every two to three years is the difference.

Can lattice go on top of my existing fence?

Yes – a 300 mm or 600 mm lattice topper on a timber or Colorbond fence is the classic way to gain privacy without rebuilding. For Colorbond fences we use steel lattice inserts (see lattice fence extensions); for timber fences we frame a matching timber lattice panel above the existing rails.

Do I need council approval for a lattice topper?

If the total fence height stays at or below 1.8 m behind the building line it is usually exempt development in NSW. Toppers that take a fence above 1.8 m, or any change to a front fence in a heritage area, may need approval – check with your council.
