Aluminium Vertical Picket Fencing & Gates Sydney – Supply or Install

Vertical picket fencing is the modern successor to the timber picket fence: flat or rectangular aluminium pickets fixed between two (or three) horizontal rails, welded into panels and powder-coated in the colour you choose. It gives a home a defined, open front boundary that still shows off the garden – and because it is aluminium, it looks the same in ten years as it does on day one.

We supply and install vertical picket panels in four heights, with picket spacing set for pool compliance (70 mm) or purely for looks, and build matching pedestrian, double and sliding gates. The photos on this page show white picket panels and a double gate we installed in Sydney.

Where vertical picket fencing works

Front boundaries – councils that limit solid front fences to 1.2 m usually allow open fencing to 1.8 m; picket panels qualify as open.
Pool barriers – 1.2 m panels with 70 mm gaps and a self-closing gate suit AS 1926.1 layouts and look softer than a pool fence.
Garden and pet fencing – keeps dogs and toddlers in without blocking the view of the garden.
Heritage streets – a raised-top picket in white or cream is the closest low-maintenance match to a period timber picket and is often accepted in conservation areas (confirm with council).

Aluminium picket vs timber picket

A timber picket fence needs painting every three to five years and its pickets eventually split, rot at the bottom rail or come loose. Aluminium pickets are welded to the rails, powder-coated in a factory, and only ever need a hose down. The upfront price is higher than treated pine, but over ten years aluminium is normally cheaper once repainting is counted – and it holds its value when you sell.

Gates to match

Every picket fence gets a gate built on the same picket and rail sizes so the line runs unbroken. Pedestrian gates use adjustable hinges and a gravity or magnetic latch (pool-rated where required); double driveway gates use a drop bolt and can be motorised; sliding gates run on a heavier 65 × 65 mm frame with a track or cantilever system. Gate posts are upsized to 65 or 100 mm and set deeper in concrete.

How it is installed

Set out post centres at 2.45 m, allowing for gates and corners.
Posts concreted 450–600 mm deep, or flanged posts bolted to a slab or wall.
Panels bracketed to the posts and screwed off; cut to length for short bays; stepped or raked on slopes.
Gates hung, latches fitted and adjusted; caps on; touch-up paint on any cut ends.
Most front fences are finished in a day.

Common questions

What is the difference between vertical picket and flat top fencing?

Both use vertical uprights between horizontal rails. Flat top uses round or square 19–25 mm tubes with a flush top rail; vertical picket uses wider flat pickets (typically 40–65 mm) with the picket tops either flush or standing above the rail, so it reads as a classic picket fence rather than a pool fence.

Is aluminium picket fencing pool compliant?

It can be. A 1.2 m panel with gaps of 100 mm or less and no climbable rails within 900 mm of the top can form part of a compliant barrier under AS 1926.1-2012. Compliance depends on the whole barrier – height, gaps, non-climbable zone and a self-closing outward-opening gate – so we design the layout with the rules in mind and recommend certification.

Will white aluminium yellow or chalk?

Powder-coated aluminium keeps its colour far longer than painted timber or PVC. A wash with a hose and mild detergent twice a year is all the maintenance it needs. It does not rust, rot, warp or need repainting.

What heights and gap sizes are available?

Panels are made in 900 mm, 1.2 m, 1.5 m and 1.8 m heights. Standard picket gaps are 50–70 mm for pool and child-safe fencing; wider spacings are available for purely decorative front fences.

Can the gate be automated?

Yes – single and double swing gates can be fitted with low-voltage swing arm or underground motors, and sliding gates are built on a heavier frame. See our automatic gates page.
