Slat fence extensions

Compatibility – what we check first

• Post profile must match. Colorbond C-posts come in three profiles – Lysaght, Slimline and Standard (double-ribbed). The extension post slides over or fixes to the existing post and has to be the same profile. Look at the top of a post or send us a photo.
• Posts and footings must be sound. An extension adds height, weight and wind load. If posts are loose, rusted at ground level or the concrete has cracked, extending is not the right fix – we will tell you and quote a repair or replacement instead.
• Total height may need approval. A 1.8 m fence extended by 300 mm becomes 2.1 m, and by 600 mm becomes 2.4 m. Fences over 1.8 m generally need council approval in NSW; heritage-listed properties always do. Check with your council before you order.
• Shared boundary? An extension changes your neighbour's side too. Talk to them first – under the Dividing Fences Act you generally cannot compel a neighbour to pay for a fence higher than a 'sufficient' dividing fence, so extensions are usually paid for by the person who wants them.
• Not every fence suits every extension. Louvre and slat inserts are lighter than solid sheet; a 600 mm solid sheet extension on a long, exposed run adds significant wind load. We assess this on site.
